Arcus intern wins Certificate of Achievement at the University of Leeds

Every year we welcome interns studying STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) from the University of Leeds (UL) to undertake a year-long placement. This year, we are proud to announce that Andre Santos, former Energy Analyst here at Arcus, won the Certificate of Achievement in the Sustainability Impact category.

This is a fantastic achievement for Andre, who out of 200 plus returning placement students from UL – 80 were nominated in the Sustainability Impact category. To be eligible for this award, students have to be nominated by their placement company and approved by their placement supervisor. Andre was nominated by Andrew MacBride, SMaRT hub – Energy Manager, for his work at Arcus and Sainsbury’s.

Andrew said, ”Andre was a team player. Charismatic and endlessly helpful, he sought to support every person in the team. He was asked to present to the head of FM for Sainsbury’s to demonstrate both the financial and wider value he provided. His accomplishments, which are too many to cover, contributed to Sainsbury’s signing off the placement programme – allowing it to continue for another year.”

Andre added, ”It was an immense surprise to have received the prize, as the nominations had been a secret between my line manager and the faculty’s employability team. The competition was fierce and everyone had done excellent work with admirable quality. It was an absolute honour and pleasure to have been awarded such a distinction. I am deeply thankful to everyone at Arcus and Sainsbury’s who worked with me, guided me, and helped me to perform to the highest standards. Particularly, I would like to thank my line manager, Andrew MacBride, who not only was my mentor throughout my time at Arcus but also the one who wrote the heartfelt submission that was worth the final prize! Finally, I would like to thank my placement supervisor, and the Leeds University EPS Employability Team, for organising the awarding ceremony and bestowing the awards.”

Andrew concludes by saying, ”Our arrangement with the University of Leeds is great for Arcus as we get so much from the students, but equally, my aim is for all students to leave Arcus with a rounded experience. I get a real kick out of seeing the growth of the individuals that have been with us. Already capable people, they grow in confidence and awareness and Andre was a great example of this.”

A huge congratulations to Andre for winning this award! We wish him well in his future endeavours.
