Meet HSQE Director – Monima Harrison Case Study

This week, we meet HSQE Director Monima Harrison and learn how his strategic leadership role helps enable, empower and ensure our teams get home safely and deliver a best-in-class service to our customers.

How long have you been with Arcus FM?

18 months

What does your role entail/what are you responsible for?

I am accountable for the leadership of the health, safety, quality and environment team (including fire) and responsible for a high performing HSQE function across the group. Delivering on both the functional strategy and company business plan. I also lead the business in building and instilling a best-in-class culture whilst ensuring continued compliance with legislation, good practice, and accreditations.

How does your role help to make a difference to our clients?

Health, safety, quality and environment management is integral in everything we do at Arcus FM and on behalf of our clients and the customers they serve daily.

I sit on the Arcus FM Board and HSQE is always the first item discussed on the agenda.  Board members set the tone and right culture, which allows for robust questions and conversations to be had – allowing me to influence important decisions that need to be made.

A key Arcus enabler is ensuring everyone gets to go home safely and part of my role is empowering fellow colleagues to manage HSQE. I do this by leading, supporting, advising, and guiding on all matters. My team ensures we have effective strategic intent around continuous monitoring and implementation of our HSQE Functional Strategy plus existing governance arrangements.  We adopt a risk management mindset, so we are seen more as problem solvers and enablers, ensuring that work gets done safely, professionally and in a timely manner which is what our clients expect.  Our field teams are at the forefront of things, so we collaborate with them to make sure they have the approved training, procedures and systems in place to deliver an award-winning service. This includes having instant access to electronic incident management that allows them to capture Leading indicators, hazard spots/near misses.

Alongside this, they also carry out dynamic risk assessments – a process which has been embedded into existing systems and allows the field teams to assess what is going on around them just before they start onsite works.  With this mechanism, our field teams can reflect quickly for a couple of minutes, consider any action required to control hazards and ensure measures are in place to continue safely. This protects their health and safety, that of others and assists in preventing accidents/ill health that may occur from work activities.

The value of communication with our colleagues cannot be overemphasised and we continue to harness this via our HSQE/Sustainability Committees and Focus Groups.

Have you taken advantage of any learning and development opportunities at Arcus?

Yes.  As a senior leader, I have recently applied and successfully gained admission to study for the Level 7 Senior Leader plus MBA with the support of our Chief Strategy Officer.

I am hoping to gain significant advanced business knowledge, enhance my commercial acumen, improve my understanding of financial strategies, for example, scenarios, modelling and identifying trends, application of economic theory to decision‐making, and how to evaluate financial and non‐ financial information.

It is still early days, but I am looking forward to learning and developing myself again in a formal setting.  As a keen learner, this reflects my belief around continuous learning and personal development.

Furthermore, with the support of Arcus creating an enabling environment of learning and self-development, I have also been able to dedicate time and effort to attain IOSH Chartered Fellow.

What’s the one thing you love most about working at Arcus?

Two things for me.  My passionate and knowledgeable Team.  On a wider scale, colleagues and how easy it is to build and develop working relationships.
