How long have you been at Arcus FM?

Eight years.

Tell us about your role.

As the Environment and Sustainability Manager, I’m responsible for Arcus FM’s compliance with all applicable law, maintaining the business’ compliance with the ISO 14001:2015 environmental management system standard, improving sustainability awareness (from an environmental, social, and governance perspective) across the company, embedding sustainability into Arcus FM’s operations, and improving our sustainability performance to help us on our journey to become a sustainability leader in the FM industry.

How did I get here? I joined Arcus FM in 2013 as a health and safety graduate after completing a degree in environmental health. The health and safety team then expanded into a HSQE (Health, Safety, Quality and Environment) team, during which I became a HSQE advisor and took over increased responsibility for environmental management (aka the ‘E’ part of HSQE).

Two years later, I took on an audit and governance manager position which involved me being responsible for managing the Arcus integrated management system, including the leading of internal and external audits.

Finally, in 2018 I moved into the position of Arcus FM’s first environment and sustainability manager. This was extremely exciting for me as environmental protection and sustainability has always been a huge passion of mine.

How does your role help to make a difference to our clients?

Embedding sustainability into Arcus FM is the right thing to do, not only morally, but also financially. It makes good business sense.

More and more new and potential clients are asking us to demonstrate what we are actively doing as an organisation to tackle the environmental and social issues that we are currently facing; climate change being an obvious example of one of these issues. Our sustainability work is helping to keep Arcus FM competitive in this space.

We are also starting to work collaboratively with many of our clients to better understand how we can support them on their own sustainability journeys by making our FM service provision more sustainable and by identifying any value-add sustainability offerings.

What learning and development opportunities have you taken advantage of?

I have been lucky enough to partake in Arcus FM’s year-long ‘Explore’ programme. The aim of this programme is to support colleagues into their next role by guiding them to starting thinking about their strengths and their potential within Arcus. Colleagues receive several tools to support their personal development such as an Insights profile, a coach within the business, and 360° feedback. The Explore programme covers the following topics: authentic leader, FED, stakeholder management, great conversations, positive psychology, and decision making. It took me on a journey of self-awareness and enhanced my line management and stakeholder management skills.

Also, I regularly take advantage of the annual sponsorship process, via which I have been approved to attend several sustainability courses which have really supported my technical skill expansion.

I also utilise our online colleague learning platform, to upskill myself on any soft skill topics that I see as my development areas.

What’s the one thing you love most about working at Arcus FM?

For me there are two:
The focus on personal development, and the freedom to deliver and make improvements.
