Meet Symon Tomlinson – Head of Strategic Development Case Study

Symon Tomlinson, Head of Strategic Development shares his 9 year journey with Arcus and how his work with the software development and integration team helps customers monitor multiple datasets in one place and detect faults before they become key operational issues.

How long have you been with Arcus FM?

9 years

What does your role entail/what are you responsible for?

I started at Arcus FM working at the Refrigeration Bureau, now known as the SMaRT hub. From there I progressed to a management position and then started to specialise in remote monitoring and IoT (Internet of Things). I work with the software development and integration team as a product owner of the software that we’ve built, such as Helix and Capital Planning Tool. This role focuses on strategies of getting the most out of our software and working with a specialist team who are working with machine learning and digital twinning along with building our own predictive maintenance rules to benefit our service field teams.

How does your role help to make a difference to our clients?

We’re using technology to make a difference to our operation, whether that’s live remote monitoring of multiple datasets in one place, and our software platform, Helix, to indicate where attention should be directed or predictive rules that detect assets which aren’t performing correctly before they potentially fail.

A recent example of our success is automating Biomass alerts and alarms which detects faults with the Biomass boiler and creates an internal work order for the field team to investigate. Consequently, this reduces the number of total Biomass outages by detecting faults before they become major operational issues. The combination of technical knowledge from our field team and our ability to create our own rules in Helix have enabled this to happen.

Have you taken advantage of any learning and development opportunities at Arcus FM?

Yes, I’ve used multiple L&D courses that are available to us all and they’ve been incredibly useful. I’ve also been fortunate enough to attend Explore and Advance courses which push you into areas that you usually wouldn’t operate in but are very effective in developing those new skills. They have also helped me meet and engage with colleagues from other sides of the business and understand their role which can be very useful knowledge as it expands how you view the wider working environment.

What’s the one thing you love most about working at Arcus FM?

Seeing how we’re growing and evolving over the years since the early days, each year I feel that we get better as a business and do more for our colleagues and so it’s exciting to consider where we’ll be in five years’ time.
