Arcus FM continues march towards net zero in 2024–25 report

Arcus FM has released its 2024–25 Sustainability Impact Report, outlining sustained progress across carbon reduction, waste management, safety performance and colleague wellbeing.

Sustainability remains embedded across the organisation’s operations, aligned to seven UN Sustainable Development Goals and supported by validated Science Based Targets initiative. The business has committed to reducing absolute scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by 42% by 2030 and by 90% by 2040, using a 2022 baseline.

This year’s report highlights measurable improvements across key areas. Scope 1 emissions fell by 4.7% year on year, while energy intensity reduced by 12.6% compared to the previous reporting period.

Investment in fleet electrification continued, with 50 additional electric vehicles introduced and a significant increase in grey fleet mileage driven in battery electric cars.

Arcus also strengthened its approach to waste reduction and circular economy. Only 3.8% of total waste was sent to landfill, with 96.2% diverted from disposal or recycled.

Health and safety performance also improved, with Accident Frequency Rates decreasing from 20.06 to 17.99 and RIDDOR Frequency Rates falling from 2.02 to 1.37.

Arcus FM attains year-on-year sustainability improvement with SFMI Gold Award

‘Technology Led, People Driven’ Facilities Management company Arcus FM has maintained and improved its SFMI Gold Award in 2024 assessment.

This achievement not only reflects Arcus’s unwavering commitment to sustainability but also showcases a remarkable improvement, with the company’s overall score rising from 72% to an impressive 83% in the latest assessment.

This year’s recognition highlights Arcus’s ability to enhance ESG performance, even amidst significant organisational changes, such as the integration of The Trios Group.

The SFMI commended Arcus for successfully maintaining its strong culture and sustainability focus during this period of growth, a challenge many businesses struggle to overcome during acquisitions.

Earlier this year, Arcus released its fourth annual Sustainability Impact Report, reaffirming its commitment to transparency and continuous improvement in sustainability. Covering the 2023/24 fiscal year, the report details progress in emissions reduction, waste management, and fleet electrification, reflecting the company’s dedication to driving meaningful change in facilities management. Zero Emissions Day: Our commitment to reducing carbon footprint

On 21st September, Zero Emissions Day is celebrated globally, raising awareness about the environmental impact of emissions. At Arcus, we’re committed to making real, measurable changes that contribute to a sustainable future.

Our emissions reduction targets are aligned with Science Based Targets (SBTi), which are currently undergoing a detailed validation process. Here’s what we’ve committed to:

  • By FY2030: We aim to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 42% from our FY2022 baseline. This includes a 42% reduction in Scope 3 emissions.
  • By FY2040: We’re committed to a 90% reduction in both Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions from FY2022 levels, achieving Net Zero by 2040 by neutralising any residual emissions.

These goals are supported by numerous initiatives that are either ongoing or in development.

Expanding Our Electric Vehicle Fleet

To further reduce our carbon footprint, Arcus has placed an order for 50 additional electric vans, adding to our current fleet of 20 EVs. This reinforces our commitment to electrifying our fleet. Additionally, we’re working on a project that optimises work order allocation and routes for our technicians, reducing both mileage and time spent in vehicles.

Sustainable Energy Sources

At three of our Arcus-operated sites, we continue to use 100% renewable electricity, backed by renewable electricity Guarantee of Origin certificates until February 2025, when we will renew. For our gas supply, 10% is backed by Renewable Gas Guarantees, with the remaining 90% covered by carbon credits from certified projects, ensuring green gas supply until 2025.

Electric Vehicle Salary Sacrifice Scheme

We also offer an electric vehicle salary sacrifice scheme for eligible colleagues, allowing them to lease electric vehicles at lower costs than conventional leases, promoting greener personal transportation options.

Drive Down CO2 by Dialling In

Since March 2020, our “Drive Down CO2 by Dialling In” initiative has focused on reducing mileage within our grey fleet (personal and company cars used for business travel). The goal is to cut one million miles to reduce emissions and meet our carbon reduction targets.

From April 2023 to March 2024, we successfully avoided 987,526 miles of travel, preventing 260 tonnes of CO2e emissions. Although just short of our one million-mile target, this achievement still represents significant progress. This financial year, we have already avoided 541,366 miles, saving around 143 tonnes of CO2e, and we’re on track to meet our target for 2024/25.

As we continue to encourage our colleagues to think about their travel and attend meetings online, we are working together to not only reduce our carbon footprint but enjoying the benefits that this work-life balance brings.

Together, we can continue making impactful changes that support a more sustainable future.

Arcus FM secures SFMI Gold Award

‘Technology Led, People Driven’ Facilities Management company Arcus FM has achieved an SFMi Gold Award for its demonstrable commitment to sustainability.

Arcus FM has received the SFMi Gold Award for its demonstrable commitment to sustainability.

Arcus FM has had a strategic focus on environment and sustainability for several years, not just in the business’ own practices, but with their customer base. From electrifying their fleet and running internal campaigns to drive down business mileage, reducing waste and implementing circular economy principles, to deploying award-winning proprietary technology to uncover and reduce their customer’s energy and carbon usage and impact.

The business has set its sights on being a true ESG (Environment, Social & Governance) leader in the Facilities Management sector – and having a transparent and robust sustainability strategy that drives meaningful action is a cornerstone of that approach.

The brand has publicly published it’s Pathway to Net Zero which you can download below, and produces an annual report to track against progress in this area – alongside it’s efforts in Social Value and Equality Diversity and Inclusion.

This commitment to sustainability, and the processes, systems and culture that underpin it, saw Arcus improve significantly across the ESG categories in their 2023 assessment and audit with the  Acclaro Advisory. The net result of this being that Arcus achieved the Gold standard for SFMi sustainability, having maintained the silver standard for the two previous years.

The SFMi assesses its criteria and strengthens the standards year-on-year in line with sustainability and FM industry developments, but Arcus is already looking at where it can further strengthen its proposition in this year and ensure year on year progress.

Chris Green, CEO at Arcus FM

Chris Green, CEO at Arcus FM said:

“We’re incredibly proud to have achieved the SFMi Gold Award, not just because it’s an ambition we’ve targeted for some time – but also because it provides confirmation that our plans and actions are delivering what our customers, communities and planet needs.”

“As an organisation, we are fully committed to sustainable development and we’re delighted to have obtained an SFMi Gold Award. We strive for a culture that goes beyond legal compliance, and aim to be a true leader in sustainability in the FM sector.

“The great thing about an assessment like this, is that not only does it allow us to pause and celebrate the work we’ve done to date, but supports us in prioritising and adding focus for the parts of the journey we’ve still got to travel.”

‘Technology Led, People Driven’ Facilities Management company Arcus FM continues on journey to be the sustainability leader in FM and releases its third annual Sustainability Impact Report.

Arcus FM is releasing it’s third annual sustainability report for the 2022/23 fiscal year.

The report discloses Arcus’s impact on key elements of environment and society, including its contribution, both positive and negative, towards the goals of sustainable development.

Arcus FM has had a strong focus on environment and sustainability for several years, not just in the business’ own practices, but with their customer base. From electrifying their fleet and running internal campaigns to drive down business mileage and reduce waste, to deploying award-winning proprietary technology to uncover and reduce their customer’s energy and carbon usage and impact.

The FM company’s main sustainability target is to reduce scope 1, scope 2 and business travel greenhouse gas emissions by 40%, normalised by revenue, by 2025 from a 2019/20 fiscal year basis.

The 2022/23 report states that by adding 18 electric vans into their fleet, they have saved 122.85 tonnes of Co2. More than that, through an internal campaign the brand has seen a 200% increase in their grey fleet milage that is being driven in electric vehicles.

Alongside the Co2 saving, 72.3% of Arcus’ waste was recycled or reused, increasing by 29.6% from the year before (Financial year 2021/22).

Within the report, Arcus FM also notes supporting its customer base energy reduction with activities such as solar panel installations that have an estimated savings of 1MW of energy. The technology led company also offers remote monitoring and commands to support the reduction of energy usage.

Chris Green, Chief Executive Officer at Arcus FM

Chris Green

Chief Executive Officer at Arcus FM

Chris Green, CEO at Arcus FM said: “Arcus is fully committed to sustainable development and is focused on embedding sustainability principles into the operation and management of the business. In facilities management, we excel if we don’t just maintain a customer’s estate but add value to their operations and the communities our customers operate in and serve.

“We strive for a culture that goes beyond legal compliance, and in to being a true leader in sustainability in the facilities management sector.”

The topic of environment and sustainability is nothing new in the facilities management sector and has been a hot topic for many years with companies launching a plethora of initiatives. The UN are now describing the climate crisis as a “code red for humanity”, and the universal aim to not allow temperatures to rise to more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels is being described as “still possible, but we are dangerously close to that threshold” by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. More concerted and all-encompassing actions are needed by all businesses to answer this call.

Arcus FM have had a strong focus on environment and sustainability for several years, not just in the business’ own practices, but within our customer base. From electrifying our fleet and running internal campaigns to drive down business mileage and reduce waste, to deploying award-winning proprietary technology to uncover and reduce a customer’s energy and carbon usage and impact.

However, as a business and working with the SFMI (Sustainable Facilities Management Index) to benchmark against others, Arcus have recognised that to have a real and lasting impact, they must move beyond individual initiatives and build an all-encompassing plan to have a material impact.

To that end, the business has launched its Pathway to Net Zero strategy – providing a clear, measurable, and data-driven framework to ensure that its operations are net-zero by 2040, and impact is substantially reduced by 2030.

This is not only vital for the planet, but for Arcus FM’s customers too – as all of Arcus’ scope 1 emissions contribute to the scope three emissions of our customers – making actions like these vital across full supply chains in every industry. Arcus is looking to take a leading role in driving sustainability in the FM sector, and have a real and actionable plan covering all business operations that are open and transparent. You can download the Arcus FM Pathway to Net Zero document here.

The Net Zero Pathway shows the targeted positive environmental and sustainability impact Arcus plans to have over the coming years, and each year, progress against that target will be measured and transparently reported through the brand’s Sustainability Impact Report. The report for 2021/22 is now live on ArcusFM.com, and can be found here.

The final area of activity that Arcus are taking, is to ensure that our data and impact are externally verified and fully transparent. To this end, Arcus FM has responded to the Science Based Target initiative’s (SBTi) urgent call for corporate climate action by committing to align with 1.5°C and net-zero through the Business Ambition for 1.5°C campaign. We have committed to set near-term company-wide emission reductions in line with climate science with the SBTi, and will be submitting baseline and targeted reduction data to them for validation over the coming months.

Arcus FM has an overarching goal of becoming a sustainable leader in the FM field and has embedded a culture of intentional everyday actions across the business that add up and have a significant positive impact on the environment.

Over the past year, through an internal campaign, we have avoided driving 718,778 miles (when compared to a 2019/20 baseline) to help achieve our company-wide five-year carbon reduction target by 2025 and significantly reduce our carbon emissions by 40% by 2025 and our longer-term net-zero goals. As part of this pledge and knowing that as a business serving customers nationwide we had to be targeted in our approach, targeting a reduction in company car and non-operational driving by working in a remote or hybrid way and using technology to attend meetings, rather than driving.

Whilst avoiding 718,778 miles is great for colleagues’ wellbeing and work-life balance, the true prize is in sustainability, as this total equates to 198 tonnes of CO2e from being emitted from vehicle exhausts.

We have already taken steps to reduce our carbon emissions by investing in electric vans, promoting the use of electric cars by colleagues and delivering ‘toolbox talks’ on Cabon reduction and awareness to all colleagues.

Kathryn Ebrey, Environment and Sustainability Lead Business Partner said, “Reducing the number of miles driven is one clear way individuals can actively contribute to reducing carbon emissions, achieving net-zero goals and ultimately taking action against climate change. As part of a 12-month awareness and engagement programme, Arcus colleagues really embraced this challenge and helped deliver considerable carbon savings. We’ll continue to build on the success of this initiative, with many more actions still to come in order to achieve our carbon and wider sustainability goals.”

Steve Willis, Chief Strategy Officer and champion of the ‘Drive Down Co2 by Dialling in’ initiative said, “Reducing our carbon emission over the past 12 months hasn’t been an easy task, however, by working collaboratively we were able to deliver significant carbon saving by cutting down on unnecessary travel.  We have seen a definite shift in the way colleagues travel and attend meetings, adopting a blended approach and only travelling when there is value from doing so, which has helped contribute to this success.

“I want to encourage people to continue this approach over the next 12 months and beyond, not only to continue the focus on our carbon footprint reduction but also to reap the work-life balance, wellbeing, safety, mitigating the effects of climate change and productivity benefits that come with less travel.”

Andreas Zepetes, Energy and Environment Advisor shares his career development journey with Arcus and how his work helps support our customers and colleagues by reducing their energy consumption demands and carbon emissions.

How long have you been at Arcus?
I’ve been at Arcus now for a total of two years now. I first joined as an undergraduate placement student from the University of Leeds in 2019, while I was in this role I worked within the SMaRT Hub Energy Team as Weather & Climate Analyst. After returning to university to complete my undergraduate degree, I re-joined Arcus as a Graduate Energy Analyst and I have recently made the switch from the SMaRT Hub Energy Team to the Environment and Sustainability Team now working as an Energy and Environment Advisor.

What are you responsible for within your role?
I am responsible for collecting and analysing data to determine Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and the carbon footprint of Arcus. This involves measuring and monitoring energy, carbon and other sustainability data to review trends and identify improvement opportunities to help reduce Arcus’ and our customers’ energy consumption and carbon footprint. I also provide Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) and Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) compliance services internally for Arcus.

Furthermore, I am accountable for tracking and reporting business sustainability impact and performance against sustainability targets in relation to energy sustainability reporting and performance monitoring, including Arcus’ five-year Carbon Reduction Target and Net-Zero by 2040 Pathway. Whilst trying to achieve these targets, I am improving colleague awareness of energy efficiency, carbon reduction and net-zero.

How does your role help make a difference to our clients?
As an Energy and Environment advisor I support our customers by helping reduce their energy consumption demands and carbon emissions. This helps them to achieve their own sustainability targets and net-zero ambitions, whilst also making them aware of low-carbon intensive practices and their wider environmental impact.

Have you taken advantage of any learning and development opportunities at Arcus?
Yes, earlier this year I completed a sustainable manufacturing short course provided by Aston University and I am currently looking into becoming an ESOS Low Carbon Consultant and then an ESOS Lead Assessor.

What’s the one thing you love the most about working at Arcus?
I love that personal development is always encouraged within Arcus. At any time where I have found a course, workshop or event that has been of interest to me and benefits my role, Arcus has encouraged me to attend. This has improved my knowledge and skillset in the field of energy and sustainability.

At Arcus we are actively working to reduce our carbon footprint and to support our carbon reduction commitment, we began the process of electrifying the fleet by introducing two electric vans (EVs) back in October 2021.

This is the latest move in Arcus’ sustainability journey. Electrifying our fleet will significantly contribute to achieving a reduction of our own carbon emissions by 40% by 2025 and our longer-term net-zero goals. These aims and ambitions need to be carefully balanced against the need to protect service to our customers – and ensure our vehicles have the range and capabilities to deliver.

Our two electric vans are currently being used in South London and Essex, with 18 more EVs on order. These vans will be circulated throughout the UK, trialling different areas with access to varying infrastructures. Before moving to a zero-carbon fleet, we will analyse data from the 20 EVs to determine where in the business electric vehicles can work in the short term. This trial will test the capability of the public charging infrastructure and will demonstrate how zero-emissions technology can play an integral part in a sustainable future.

Anton Jungblut, Refrigeration Managing Engineer and Ryan French, Refrigeration Engineer, were the first of our colleagues to take on this initiative and after six months of trialling the Evs, they’ve shared their thoughts and experiences.

Anton said, “The new Electric van is comfortable and modern with some great features – a personal favourite of mine is the cruise control and speed limiter feature, it is an amazing addition to the van, as it helps prevent speeding fines. I imagine this would be a plus for most engineers. The shelving in the van is also minimal, this is a positive for me as I have managed to rearrange the van around my needs. I know this could be a minus for some engineers, but I personally like it.”

Ryan French shares, “It’s been an interesting and overall positive experience driving an electric van. I work around South London, and although the roads are always busy – it has been a good and easy vehicle to adjust to, with the bonus of its automatic drive, so there’s no constant clutch usage. While I’m not on call, the mileage from full to charge is perfect for daily use in my area of operation and because of this I haven’t had to stop and charge the van while I’m out – due to my daily mileage being covered.

“Overall, it has been an incredibly positive experience for me, with only a few downsides –and hopefully as electric vehicles become more popular, the negatives will reduce.”

To support our EV feedback and the rollout of an electric fleet, our primary focus will be expanding our home charging capability to counteract the gaps in public charging infrastructure, to make electric charging more accessible. As a business, we have already installed a total of eight electric charging point, which has the ability to charge up to 16 vehicles – with more charging points to be installed at our new Stevenage Training Centre.

This investment will help prepare our business for the UK Government 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel vehicles and will assist with meeting both the Government’s 2030 carbon reduction target and the 2050 net-zero target.
